San Cristobal de Las Casas:
- We went to visit the San Cristobal Church, situated on a hill, which offered also nice views of the town. To reach the church, couple of stairs in front of us...
- Nice views of the town but very difficult to take a decent picture with all the trees in front
- 'El Arco Del Carmen' or ' Carmen's Arc',
- From San Cristobal, we took a collectivo to visit San Juan Chamula, the indigenous Tzotzil Maya people. The town enjoys unique autonomous status within Mexico. No outside police or military are allowed in the village as the village has its own police force,
- The church is a curiosity on its own. There were no benches in the church and the floor was covered by green pine boughs and Coca-Cola bottles containing candles. Also there was smoke from the coal resin incense burning. It was not possible to take picture inside the church and the locals take very unkindly to anyone doing so....a japanese tourist was knocked out by a local man a few years ago for ignoring the warning signs.....
- In front of the church, there was a long queue of women, some carrying babies on their back. We did not know why they were queuing but we are thinking that was to collect some food tickets from the government as we saw some posters but we could be wrong...
