San Cristobal de Las Casas:
From the Agua Azul waterfall, we were supposed to go directly to San Cristobal as the Tour Agency told us. The waterfall is located ~60Km from Palenque by the road that leads towards San Cristobal. But at our surprise, the van from the Tour Agency started heading off to Palenque. He drove for 30min then stopped and we waited 30 min the bus which was taking us to San Cristobal. So we lost 1.5hr waiting and on the road and we arrived very late at San Cristobal. We really don't like Tour Agency!
San Cristobal de Las Casas {2200m altitude}, whose name underwent several changes over 300 years until the definitive name given in 1848, was founded by the Spaniard De Mazariegos in 1528. It was the capital of Chiapas State from the colonial era but the power passed to Tuxtla Gutierrez at the beginning of the 20th Century creating an internal war between the 2 towns. It retains many of the colonial buildings and churches.
What a change of temperatures when we arrived at San Cristobal!!! It was absolutely freezing and we went from passing the night on the top of the bed to under 4 blankets!!! We spent several days here because 1/ we went shoe shopping for Lee who finally found his new sandals after a 2 days shopping marathon {and we found them in the last shop we visited} ! , 2/ the rainy season had started and from 2pm it was badly pouring rain so we could visit the city and the surroundings only during the mornings {and you need to know that we are not early risers}.
- The Cathedral with its superb yellow and orange colours,
- The main plaza with 2 shoe cleaners in front. The shoe cleaners are pretty popular with the locals but not with us because we have been asked dozens of times to have our shoes cleaned but we are wearing sandals!
- How sad looked these 2 dogs? it was 2pm and it was pouring rain. I suppose dogs don't like too much rain...it is not Ellie, Lee's mum's dog, who is going to say the opposite, she hates to be wet also!!!
- Nice sunset with heavy grey clouds leaving some sun rays passing through, the picture was takenfrom the front terrace of the hostel,
- No TV in the room, pouring rain outside, we were laying cards for couple of hours. You can see how cold it was even in the room...
- We went to take a cup of coffee in a restaurant in front of the main plaza and we saw this original frame. Somebody obviously updated the picture with a nice surgical mask to remember the reality of our time...
