Canon del Sumidero - photos

Canon Del Sumidero:

From Cristobal, we headed off to Chiapa de Corzo from where we could visit the Canon Del Sumidero. We thought after the boat trip we would be moving to Tuxtla Guttierez, the capital of Chiapas State, but Chiapa was a charming town and we decided to stay the night here. The next post will show some pictures from Chiapa.

We visited El Canon Del Sumidero through the now navigable Grijalva River. The boat trip took ~2hrs and the last point on the river is the Dam of Manuel Moreno Torres. On our way back, the rain started with very big drops but it was pretty localized so when we arrived at Chiapa, no sign of wet clothes.
- Superb vegetation surrounding the river, acting as ecological reserve...
- ...and home of crocodiles which are common here and it was better to avoid having the hands in the water...
- 'La Cascada Arbol de Navidad'. Can you distinguish the face of a witch? It was pretty amazing especially when we approached closer to the waterfall which was dry as the rain season was not at its maximum,
- The altitude of the canyon is ~900metres at its maximum point. From this point, the 'Chiapa' Indians threw themselves into the river rather than letting the Spaniards trap them,
- 'la Cueva del Christo' or the 'Christ Cave' where the body similar to Jesus Christ {right of the ladder} can be seen. Also on the to left of the ladder, there is a statue of the Virgin surrounding by lots of red Christmas tinsel,
- The Dam of Manuel Moreno Torres or also called 'Chicoasen', which is the largest hydro plant in Mexico. With its 261meters, it is the 5th tallest in the world.
