Chiapa de Corzo:
When we arrived at Chiapa from San Cristobal, we saw this massive plaza, , with a big crown like monument. We liked it as the town looked peaceful so we decided to stay for a night after the boat trip to Canon Del Sumidero.
Chiapa de Corzo was founded in 1528 by Diego de Mazariego after a hard battle with the Soctona ethnic group who resisted several attacks from the Spaniards. Facing defeat, many of the Indians chose death instead of surrender jumping to their death in the Canon Del Sumidero {following the legend...}.
- The General Angel Corzo plaza, whose size was very impressive for the size of the town,
- The famous 'Fuente Colonial' with Mudejar style, built in 1562 by Fray De Leon who took inspiration from the Real Crown of Castilla. 30 meters height, 15 meters diameter. More than its artistic value, it saved people during epidemics and illness providing drinking water to the population,
- The tower of the Santo Domingo Temple, built in 1554. Inside this tower, a bell old of 433 years is kept closely, making this bell one of the oldest of the country. On the sky, we can see approaching very bad clouds announcing an imminent rain...
-...and the rain was pretty bad. In 5 min, all the streets were flooded. The people in charge of these two stalls were watching impassively the rain,
- Well for us, we were nicely and warm inside the hotel room and Lee was drinking his 1L-bottle of beer watching TV...what a tough life!!!
