Otavalo:
Before moving to Colombia, our final stop in Ecuador was Otavalo a largely indigenous town 2hrs north of Quito. We reached the town on Saturday morning for the famous craft market and the little town was really overcrowded!! Tourists but also lots of Ecuadorians. The market was full of colours, various types of "souvenirs" and full of "Mamitas". For information, Mamita is the gentle name for "small Mami" or "Mummy". There are normally older than 45years and mainly a little overweight... Lee was in stitches and I was not happy the first time I was called Mamita!!! But it is also a generic term for "love"and it is used affectionnaly so I calmed down! Check the pictures to find the Mamitas.
- The grains section of the market with in the background the "comedor" or "food hall". All of course cooked with natural ingredients in huge casserole pans!
- Who wants a wool ball? All colours were available,
- Lots of paintings on sale and some masks, the same that we have seen in Quito for the New Year's Eve,
- Mamita in front of her stand. She is wearing the traditional costume of the area,
- Lee was walking around taking also plenty of pictures.
