Chichicastenango - photos 2

Chichi:

The Good Friday celebration.

- These men were wearing the traditional costume and were not too happy to see us taking pictures. One of them told Lee to stop or give some money in a not very nice way. Some indigenous people are very suspicious and don't like photos,
- A nice photo of local women wearing the traditional costume and carrying the platform. That was a difference with Antigua where women were wearing the black dress with the white mantillas (typical Spanish costume). They were very into it as we can see on their very serious faces,
- Very imposing platform of Jesus Christ. The haze was coming from the fumes of the incense that kids were swinging all over,
- Platform of the Virgen Mary, carried by the women. Looks very heavy and not very easy to handle especially in the narrow streets. The pictures were taken from the balcony of our hotel which was situated on the parade route,
- A difference too with Antigua was the presence of singers in the crowd. Two local women were singing catholic songs in Spanish and in Kiche with the musicians playing live. Everything was not perfect but these local group brought a particular charm to the procession. We can still remember the chorus of one song: "Estoy pensando en Dioooooooooooooooooos, estoy pensando en su amoooooooooooooooor!!!" (I am thinking about God, I am thinking about his love).
- The streets of Chichi were very crowed but only with locals. It was nice to be part of this procession.
