From Tupiza to Uyuni Salar - photos 6

From Tupiza to Uyuni Salar - last day of our trip, the Uyuni Salar, the biggest salt plain in the world (10.500Km2)
- Early morning on the Salar, Lee is contemplating the sunrise,
- These giant cactus can be seen in the "Isla del Pescado" or Incahuasi Island or Fish Island, formed by calcareous rocks, rest of corail and marine shells. Obviously because there is no water at this moment of the year, it is not really an island!
- Watching the sunrise (5.30am) in the Salar, superb! Driving to the Salar is possible as the lake is totally flat,
- The Salt Hotel built completely of blocks of salt cut out of the lake. All inside is made by salt (except toilets, lighting and billiards tables). Different from the hotel we stayed, this one is a museum and is the last remaining after 2 other ones were deconstructed and moved away for environmental concerns,
- Worker on the right is scraping a layer of salt into piles. Then these piles will be transported by trucks near the village of Colchani for processing. For information, for 30Kg of purified salt, the worker earns 8 bolivianos or 70pences!
